Eleanor Rigby

Read in English

Eleanor Rigby

I am presenting this composition as an act of vengeance against all those polytones, sonytones, megatones and excrementones which have been bombarding me for quite some time. You can’t even turn on the TV, or the radio, or go out into the street for a few seconds without hearing tunes or jingles that don't make any sense, that are deliberately set up fashions designed to last no more than 10 days, and quite frankly I am sick and tired of it all.

¿Where does it come from and from whom? It seems that one of the most lucrative businesses in Spain (and I suppose in many other countries as well) is that of indiscriminately churning out musical rubbish, one chunk after another, until we tire of it. The thing is that we do not tire of it. Why is that? Has our sense of good taste atrophied or our musical ear gone deaf?

The vengeance I wreak on all of them is “Eleanor Rigby”, a great and powerful theme which was produced by four young men (as they were, a few years ago) who wrote not only good songs but about good subjects. That is to say songs which were open to different interpretations. Their style was a milestone in our or vision of life.  They got together forty years ago although, even today, it is quite clear that this quartet, in its original form is held to be still valid today. They use the counterpoint. They use metric and lyrical phrases which constitute a song: simply a song. Nowadays, I miss those artists who possess their own, individual sound and create trends and innovations in musical style. The spotty-faced “groups” just emerging from adolescence, clad in stock from Zara just make me tired. Their ignorant yobbishness goes to extremes. I cannot understand how they don’t even know who the Beatles or Bruce Springsteen are.

A propos of this opus that I would like you to hear: it is a magnificent arrangement by the colombian writer and composer Edgar Ordóñez. You can view his profile on YouTube by clicking HERE. These are seven pages of intelligent sound effects and pure rhythm in which the composer/ arranger shows the clear influence of Bela Bartok. What I’d like to point out in this arrangement is the rupture of mechanisms. It contains several, immediately identifiable and of very short duration, from the quite articulate semi-quavers to the accentuated black notes. Salient are the delicacy of the introduction and the finale which lead us to an eagerly awaited adagio. It is a bit of a challenge to place your finger right for the pop rhythm. Edgar has caught the perfect balance between not being too jazzy and the inclusion of evident classical connotations. How, with a total absence of set patterns does he achieve such an almost brutal movement. This is a very interesting piece which affords the work-a-day pianist those sonorous echoes which should never be lacking. I recommend you listen to this. I would like to thank Edgar Ordóñez for generously sending me the score. Works as extraordinary as this demonstrate that there is still good music around. I hope you enjoy it and will never be satisfied with anything less.

I dedicate this song to all lovers of good music.

Note: this arrangement by Edgar Ordóñez is intended for students of intermediate to advanced level.
