La fuga (I)

Read English version

Sujeto: a veces llamado, incorrectamente, tema.

The fugue (I)

This is the first of a series of three videos, in very different styles, which I am devoting to the Fugue.

Here are the links to the other two articles:

The Fugue (II)

The Fugue (and III)

In the introduction to A musical meaning and emotion, Stephen Davies writes “… I don’t believe that all music is expressive. Neither do I believe that “expressiveness” is the most important factor within music that is expressive”. To illustrate this I’m going to take Bach’s Art of the Fugue, as an archetypical example. According to him, this is a work in which the attention of the listener should be centered on “how the material is used”; the expressive and dynamic characteristics of the music – or their absence – are of marginal relevance. This appreciation is not atypical. The reputation of “The Art of The Fugue” as a cerebral and intellectual work is so widespread that Rinaldo Alessandrini wonders, in his recording notes: “Is it possible to consider the Art of the Fugue to be music?”

Some have gone to the extreme of describing the Art of the Fugue as “Augenmusik” or “Music for the Eyes” which should be looked at and analysed but not performed as sound.

To begin, my duty in writing this article is to introduce this sort of nonsense first and foremost and, from there, little by little, to do away with them. I hope that you agree with me when I say that the fugue is a marvellous form of musical expression, combining naturally technical elements as in all musical forms and at the same time developing them in the most expressive way possible.

The fugue is not a musical form: a fugue consists of a collection of counterpoint procedures which may or may not appear in the course of a given opus. For us to consider that a fugue deserves that name there is a necessary and sufficient condition, which is to contain the so-called exposition of a fugue.  Any other procedure, however characteristic it might be, is optional.

Elements which are possible for a complete fugue (save the fugue exposition, all others may be used or not):

1. Exposition: here the subject and, possibly, the counter-subject are introduced.

2. Episodes or divertimenti as development and, more rarely linking.

3. Counter-exposition.

4. Thematic blocks.

5. Stretti (singular, stretto).

6. Pedal note.

7. Choral exposition.

8. Passages of “bravura” (typical in the so-called concerto fugue)

9. Contrary movements, augmentations, diminutions, retrogrades, retrograde inversions, periphrastic entries and, in general, any contrapuntal technique.

Fugues can also be of the typical model, doubles, triples, quadruples – depending on whether they have one, two, three or four subjects.

In addition to this, they can be for two, three, four and even five voices. There are fugues with even higher numbers but these are very infrequent. Furthermore, at times we can have fugues with an indefinite number of voices.

Subject: sometimes erroneously called “theme”. The normal definition of “subject,” whether or not it belongs to a fugue, is that of a musical fragment, typically brief, with no definite beginning or end (that is to say that it can form part of a melody). See Nokia Fugue. The baroque motto according to which the unity of theme leads to the unity of sense affects the subject in the fugue, making the ideal that in which all its elements are derived from the subject.

In the exposition (beginning of the fugue) the subject is expressed by one voice, and it is imitated with certain changes –transfer to the fifth with possible interval-modifications called mutations– in another  and circulating among the rest of the voices in the original form or modified until all the voices are employed. That is to say, the echo effect.

In the second appearance of the subject the so-called counter-subject can appear in another voice which would be a sort of a subject of a secondary nature and which would always or most often accompany the subject.  I call this Sancho Panza and the subject, Don Quixote.

Episodes (or divertimenti): passages in which aspects of the subject are developed (in Bach the countersubject, too), with the aim of creating a musical crescendo. Frequently, though this is not obligatory, they are modulating passages. It is rarer and typical of pre-baroque fugues in that they consist of brief passages used only as a connecting device: that of the subject with some of its different versions. I have already mentioned Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Now let’s compare the episodes with Dulcinea and her flirting up and down with poor Quixote.

Counter-exposition: it is an exposition after the exposition, typical of very long fugues with great, formal ambitions (for example: Bach’s Great Fugue in G minor) or by some very dull french composers (d’Indy, How many crimes have been committed in your name?).

Thematic blocks: passages which reiterate the subject, typically in a less tense form than in the rest of the fugue. They may or may not recapitulate the scaled or stepped nature of the exposition.

Stretti: passages in which the subject of the fugue is superimposed upon itself.

Pedal Note (it does not have anything to do with a piano pedal. so, please do not confuse them): it is a passage in which a voice –typically the bass voice– repeats the same note for a long time, usually with tension-adding purposes (dominant pedal note) or distension purposes (tonic pedal). Although it can appear at any moment, it is typical before the end.

Choral exposition: the subject presented with a harmonic treatment similar to that of the Lutheran Choral. It is characteristic of endings. One example would be the end of the fugue in G minor WTC1 (i.e. The Well Tempered Clavier – Book one).

Passages of Bravura or bold and audacious instrumental flurries which substitute the episodes. There are examples of this in all violin fugues.

With regard to the counterpoint techniques mentioned above, these can crop up in any part of the work. The most important of these is the contrary movement, which can be further explained in the article that CarlPhilipp wrote about this in due course.

Summary: for a composition to bear the name of “fugue” it must have the elements which make up a fugue exposition, that is to say, the scaled entries with their transport to the fifth which we spoke of when we referred to the subject (Don Quixote). Sancho Panza (the counter-subject) may appear or not, leaving Quixote to continue his way alone and that the treatment of the other voices be counterpoint. Basically, this is a “fugue”.

All musical themes can be treated as fugues, as you will have seen with a simple telephonic theme. On many occasions the subject itself may be of slight interest (this is especially true in fugue prior to Froberger and Bach) or tremendously cryptic (such as the WTC1, in F minor).  Even then the fugue thus created can be fabulous in the hands of a composer who really knows what he is doing. I end this first part of my article by stating that I am completely opposed to those composers I mentioned at the beginning.

Note by CarlPhilipp: the ignorance of these composers is deplorable. Apart from the fact that many of us may weep tears enough to boil a chicken on hearing the Art of the Fugue, perhaps especially at that terrible moment when there is no final fugue, that of my namesake –Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach– who wrote “on including the name of Bach as a countersubject the composer died”, reveals a profound ignorance of the history and evolution of the medium. The origins of the fugue represent, curiously enough, an immensely simple type of structure, beyond any technical gimmicks. This disdain for technique leads me to think that they cook over a fire and are against contact lenses and other suspicious and anti-expressive artifacts, but I won’t go on about it all this now: I have my blog for that.

Basic considerations when it comes to performing a fugue on the piano:

Fingering: as in many fugues, we have to understand that these are not compositions intended for the piano. Therefore, our fingering will require our attention and intelligence. Very often, we will not be able to use an orthodox fingering and we will have to use our ingenuity in order to achieve something that is quite common in fugues: the substitution of fingers. The most important thing in a fugue is always the theme or subject and the permanent imitation of this theme or subject, from beginning to end. If we, the performers, have physical problems with the reach of our hands for example, we have to be clever and extend our reach to the utmost to make up for it. Those of you who are starting to play fugues will find that, at times the hand behaves rather strangely. The intervals of third and fourth with consecutive fingers, very fast linking pedals, sustaining a pedal note with impossible forms some times, etc. don’t matter if the result is clear for the audience in general and to ourselves. Our ear is going to be seeking that theme again and again. We will try however to make the episodes as delicate as possible as we try to attain the maximum fluency in our modulations. We have very many cadences and semi-cadences in a fugue. Personally, as you will have seen, I love to accentuate each and every one. Not only will we, ourselves, relax but so will our ear and also that of the audience. I must mention the portato. Portato are those notes which we want to make stand out in simply supportive form, not accentuated, not aggressive, not staccato, not necessarily forte, but just supportive and never legato. In this way we will be able to achieve the proper emphasis on the subject.

I particularly dislike aggressive fugues and this is where the Portato are important. The legatos we might need to make outside the theme or subject and its imitations we do by closing the fingers together, not with pedal legato (Romantic legato). In this way we will achieve a perfect fugue style as well as clarity of touch.

Metre: as I have said before, on occasions the theme is usually short and simple, but that does not mean that the rhythm is conspicuous by its absence. We will have be quite clear as to what the metre of the phrase is, as in a song.

Air or tempo: in baroque fugues we are aware of the absence of this indication. Why? I suspect that the composers presupposed that their works would be performed by musicians rather than mere technicians. So then, let us be musicians and try to find out just what that tempo is. Let us bear in mind that that the organ is in no way the same as a clavichord, or a harpsichord or a piano as it has an entirely different mechanical structure and resonance. We don’t need to keep a metronomic number in our head, just an approximate air: slow, tranquil or prestissimo for example.

Tonality: on the supposition that it exists, the normal thing would be to use it as an element of development for which reason it should be taken into account in order for to decide whether we are faced with tension or distension.

Dynamics: it is closely connected with the sort of air we wish to give our fugue and, naturally, the number of breaths, legatos, portato, etc., that we wish at to use. That is to say that the same theme at the same tempo will have nothing to do with one kind of dynamics or another.    All this together will define for us what the most suitable phrasing will be.

Finally, and after analysing this, we will decide what sort of articulation we want to use, lighter or less so, how we are to execute the ornamentation if there is any, how we are going to use the pedal –should we want to, how we are going to interpret the dynamics, the tempi and whether the quality of sound is light or heavy. We must be aware of whether the interpretation we are offering is more or less correct and, if indeed it is within the style to which it belongs or not. I must also mention that the interpretation of a fugue, whatever sort it might be, is usually the subject of controversies which,  to me, seem pointless: controversies over articulation, over whether or not the pedal should be used, the air and so on.   These controversies usually arise among the so-called purists of the Baroque, people who maintain that the playing of Baroque music should continue as it was three centuries ago, without bearing in mind that our technique is not the same as it was then and that our means of expression are naturally different. It is not the same thing or anything like it, to ride bicycle or drive a motor boat. Our instruments possess an infinity of sound-variations, amazing timbres, escape, double escape, pedals and of course a much longer resonance. In my opinion these are works which are open to our individual freedom of expression, always provided we be clear when expressing the subject and develop it.  I don’t mind whether the work is played faster or more slowly, with the pedal or without it, with a light articulation or heavy, as long as we understand the message that the player is sending out be clear and simple.

A brief summary of the Nokia Fugue

The fugue was written by Vincent Lo and here you can download the score. You will have noticed that it is based on the famous “Nokia Melody”. What you might not know is that that melody is part of the Grand Waltz, for guitar, by Francisco Tárrega.

Elements which appear in this fugue for three voices:

the subject, which is very well known to all those who have a cell-phone, various episodes, thematic blocs in which now and again the subject is presented in contrary movement and stretti.

It is a medium-level work and extremely interesting for any student. Unconsciously, the ear seeks out that sonorous echo of the familiar theme. As it lacks pedal notes, we try to maintain the sound at a stable level using very brief pedals and only a half pedal stroke, basically marking nearly all the black keys.   It is a very short piece (three pages) to which we shall devote an afternoon. The tempo is lively but relaxed and peaceful. The articulation is exaggerated and strives to be as clean as possible;  otherwise it would all be a joke about a joke.

The work in itself is not one of great depth.  Nevertheless, as a teacher and performer I see no reason why we should not include it in our interpretive curriculum. Furthermore, I urge you, the students, to use it.   You will see just how much your teachers will like it.  If they do not, then it would seem to indicate that you need to change your maestro. There is life beyond that masterpiece, “The Well-tempered Clavier”.

OleMikaelSoerensen -

Beautifully played.

Adela -

Me pareció interesante y divertida.

Thanks a lot, Zeryx. I hope you don't mind if I reveal your secret identity: the composer of this fugue.

zeryx28 -

Wonderful interpretation. Kind of inspires me to go learn how to play my own composition, haha. You're the second person to post a video of a performance of this piece. Good for you!

Also wanted to say thanks for posting this video. It made my day, as I am drowning in work. Oh, the shortcomings of a procrastinator!

I will subscribe to your channel. Thanks!

Carl Philipp -

Hello, María Teresa. I have to recognize you never cease to astound me with your eclectic repertory. A VERY clear sound, an a very clear playing of a fugue.
